The St James Cycleway crosses the Waiau on McArthur Bridge (no horses permitted) but at the moment there is no bridge there at all. It follows the eastern bank downriver for 2.5km to reach the 4WD carpark at The Terraces.

From the 4WD carpark at The Terraces the St James Cyclewway follows the eastern valleyside north for 2.5km before crossing to the west via McArthur Bridge (horses not permitted) which is currently removed due to damage to the approach to the bridge. Pool Hut lies a further 500m up the western bank on a higher terrace (the Old Bridge hut is dilapidated (2019) and not fit for use).
