From the Mill Site, cross the river. This is knee to thigh deep in normal flows and can be impassable after rain. Pick up the continuation of Wakarara Rd on the opposite bank, climbing the face. The former Makararo Base Camp has been removed - it's not the accommodation block at Ongaonga field centre, and features a photo of a bulldozer dragging a house-moving truck with the building on across the river.
Turn left along Makaroro Rd to reach the park boundary 500m later at a signposted DOC junction. This section passes through private forestry, but permission is not required.
Craig Hut has also been removed.
