At the forks where the new 4WD track crosses the river, head WNW away from the river over forested flats, and pick up the base of a spur climbing NW. Either follow the spur up, or zigzag your way up on old, overgrown logging tracks. The tracks end at about the 500m contour, so from here up, you must follow the spur to the summit. Good ground trails exists up the spur, but the route is not marked.

Once on the top, follow the good trail north until it climbs briefly to the saddle with ridge 601. This ridge leads west to Kapakapanui, or north to drop and cross to Island Range,

From the saddle, follow the broad ridge south on a well travelled route, Follow the trail as it drops SW towards the forks. As it drops the ground trail disappears, but follow the spur down. Logging tracks appear below 500m, and you can zigzag these down, but the spur is probably easier. At the base, but east until you hit the river. A 4WD track crosses here both above and below the forks. This climbs to join the tramping track on the opposite bank.
