From Te Atua Mahuru travel SW on tussock of the main range, to the top of the spur which runs NNW down the western side of the big slip off Te Atua Mahuru. There is an old track down this spur, re-cut in 2013 by Heretaunga Tramping Club and Napier Tramping Club.
(For next route segment: travel in the river bed to Colenso Hut is straight-forward in normal flows, because there is much shingle in the river bed.)
Historical note: the NZFS Remutupo Hut was in the river near the bottom of this spur. Literally "in the river" eventually - the aggrading river bed brought shingle into the hut and the hut was removed in approx 1981.
