From upper cromel follow the DOC track down to the next major valley forks (just visible through tress) and head up the spur to 1595. At the tree line the scrub becomes quite tall and dense but this only lasts for about 100m until the scrub becomes small. You can sidle to the right of 1595m and head up to 1630m. Go past 1478 and take the next spur to the right and down to the stream. Finding the hut from this direction is tricky so I would recommend following the stream all the way down to the forks where the DOC track starts and then turning around and heading up the scrubby spur as if you came from the DOC track direction
