From the new Basins's Hut, cross Basins Creek to the old Musterer's hut visible opposite. An old farm track drops to the Avoca and crosses it, joining the main 4wd track up / down the valley on the true left of the Avoca. This can be followed upriver. After 2km the confluence with Aphitheatre Creek is reached.

Both river crossings are OK in normal conditions, but wither could become impassible after heavy rain.

An easy walk along an old farm track up / down the Avoca valley on the true left. A branch of the track crosses the Avoca upstream of the Basins Creek confluence, passes old (musterer's) Basins Hut and crosses Basins Creek to the new (NZFS) Basins Hut.
