Follow sign to Happy Daze from Makaretu Hut, which drops into side stream. Travel a few meters downstream to rejoin the Makaretu River, which becomes noticeable bigger, but still easily navigable in low flows. Continue downstream, in and out of the river - many bypass tracks (some marked with old Permolat markers) are present on the bends. Fairly easy walking with variable levels of slipperiness. A few metres upstream of the Forks, large orange triangles and a DOC sign mark the unmapped track to Happy Daze Hut.
