From the Kaitoke Roadend, a broad, well used, benched track sidles and climbs east towards Puffer Saddle. The surface is clay and can be slippery - but this is an easy, good track.

The junction where the Southern Crossing turns off the Puffer Saddle track is signposted and reached after about 1km.
