From Hapenui Hut upstream, broad river flats of shingle and small rocks lead to the forks of Ngatametea / Onepu, which is marked by a DOC signpost. Several crossings are prferred - knee deep in normal flows, but can be avoided with bushbashing. Continuing up the Onepu a track starts at the forks and heads upriver with more crossings through gorged sections to reach flats at the next main forks. Onepu Hut is visible just upstream from the forks.
