From Aranga Hut, the cut marked DOC track continues west onto flat tops of pt1406, a poled route continuing as far as the bushedge on the western side. Here the track enters private land and is no longer maintained by DOC. A roughly marked route continues west over the saddle to pt1396, dropping and sidling the northern face for the last 200m.

From pt1396 the track enters private land to the east and is no longer maintained. Drop down the bushedge on the northern side of the ridge some 50m until you pick up a taped route / stoat-line sidling east into the beech. Follow this, climbing to the ridge some 200m later and then climbing the ridgeline towards tops on the eastern side of the saddle. Once on the open tops of pt1406 the track is poled, swinging NE then east before dropping back into the beech forest. A marked, cut track drops through beech from the bushedge to a small basin at the head of a north-flowing creek, where Aranga Hut is located.
