The climb of the Wilson Pass from the Hunter is simple, up steady tussock faces. Climb the first creek south of the pass until you are above the beech and scrub. Then sidle/climb east towards the pass itself, 1-2hrs to pass.

From the pass a direct descent into the head of the Wills is possible down stable tussock and rock faces. The valley starts rocky, but soon opns out to good tussock flats. A 3km gorged section follows the end of the flats - walking / scrambling over riverbed boulders. Tougher travel, but OK so long as the river is not in flood. Flats resume after the gorge, and an easy walk to Wills Hut follows, though several more river crossings are required.
5-10hrs from pass to hut.

I walked this in a dry April, and river crossings were generally knee deep, and ok.
