Once out on the main flats, cross the Acheron Lakes outlet stream and head south, skirting around patches of bush along the way. There are loads of camp spots down here. The Upukerora enters the forest at about the 700m contour, the flats don't extend down the river like the map indicates.

Downstream of here it is possible to travel all the way to Army Hut via animal trails on the true left, or by an old track marked by sporatic permalot and tape markers on the true right, but fastest travel is in the river bed, crossing as required, when river levels allow .
