A volunteer-maintained track runs up the true left of Cone Creek from the Haupiri Forks to the first flat 1.5km upriver.

The track is marked with permolat and well cut (2018).

After 1.5km the track drops to the first flats and ends at the river. Travel upstream from here is in the riverbed for 1.5km to where the next section of sidle track starts. This section of riverbed is impassable after heavy rain as slips / bluffs drop right into the river. In high rain you'd need to climb to low terraces above the river which are clogged with windfall and cut by steep, sharp drops into each side creek.
