An old 4WD track cuts off the St James Cycleway at the base of the descend from Charlies Saddle, following the stream marked on maps. The track makes a sidling descent to the Waiau flats to the south (marked pt568) on maps. These flats provide the last reasonable crossing of the Waiau in normal flows.
