The St James Cycleway runs up the eastern valleyside of the Waiau. The track is benched, and of gentle gradient though not surfaced so can be soft for cycling, especially after freeze-thaw.

A signpost 400m before the 4wd carpark marks the southern-most of two crossings giving access to the Waiau Pass track on the western bank.
