A rough 4WD track runs south along the Old Man Range from the Waikaia Bush Rd saddle. The road on the east side of the fence is on private land and does not exactly match the route of the legal road, so be warned. Public legal walking access is present on DOC land on the west of the fenceline.

The fence climbs to a broad summit, where it swings east. An old rough track drops south from here to Junction Hut. The junction is not signposted and the track is not obvious at first.
